who say, “Keep away; don’t come near me, for I am too sacred for you!” Such people are smoke in my nostrils, a fire that keeps burning all day.


Hear the word of the Lord, you who tremble at his word; ‘Your own people who hate you, and exclude you because of my name, have said, “Let the Lord be glorified, that we may see your joy!” Yet they will be put to shame.


‘Those who are wise will instruct many, though for a time they will fall by the sword or be burned or captured or plundered.


Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.


‘Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.


Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.


Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;


‘Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father.


‘A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.


‘Woman,’ Jesus replied, ‘believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.


Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshippers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks.


His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue.


To this they replied, ‘You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!’ And they threw him out.


When they heard this, they were furious and wanted to put them to death.


‘Look,’ he said, ‘I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.’
