John 13:1 - New International Version (Anglicised)

1 It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in the human race.


The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: ‘I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.


Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, ‘Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners.


and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’


Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour – when darkness reigns.’


As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.


When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing before the Passover.


Jesus replied, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.


Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor.


Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;


‘A new command I give you: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.


‘You heard me say, “I am going away and I am coming back to you.” If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.


but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me. ‘Come now; let us leave.


I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.’


After Jesus said this, he looked towards heaven and prayed: ‘Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.


They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.


I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.’


And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.


Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, ‘Who is it you want?’


Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, ‘I am thirsty.’


When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.


The Jewish Passover Festival was near.


At this they tried to seize him, but no-one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.


Therefore Jesus told them, ‘My time is not yet here; for you any time will do.


He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no-one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.


No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.


He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.


We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original conviction firmly to the very end.


But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.


We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope for may be fully realised.


Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.


We love because he first loved us.


and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood,
