Therefore the Lord, the Lord Almighty, the Mighty One of Israel, declares: ‘Ah! I will vent my wrath on my foes and avenge myself on my enemies.


What will you do on the day of reckoning, when disaster comes from afar? To whom will you run for help? Where will you leave your riches?


The idols among the smooth stones of the ravines are your portion; indeed, they are your lot. Yes, to them you have poured out drink offerings and offered grain offerings. In view of all this, should I relent?


It will be made a wasteland, parched and desolate before me; the whole land will be laid waste because there is no-one who cares.


How long will the land lie parched and the grass in every field be withered? Because those who live in it are wicked, the animals and birds have perished. Moreover, the people are saying, ‘He will not see what happens to us.’


I looked, and there were no people; every bird in the sky had flown away.


Should I not punish them for this?’ declares the Lord. ‘Should I not avenge myself on such a nation as this?

Because of this the land dries up, and all who live in it waste away; the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky and the fish in the sea are swept away.


To you, Lord, I call, for fire has devoured the pastures in the wilderness and flames have burned up all the trees of the field.


Hear this word, Israel, this lament I take up concerning you:


‘Fallen is Virgin Israel, never to rise again, deserted in her own land, with no-one to lift her up.’
