The next day the elder daughter said to the younger, ‘Last night I slept with my father. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and sleep with him so we can preserve our family line through our father.’


Why do you boast of evil, you mighty hero? Why do you boast all day long, you who are a disgrace in the eyes of God?


‘Here now is the man who did not make God his stronghold but trusted in his great wealth and grew strong by destroying others!’


it will be the same for priest as for people, for the master as for his servant, for the mistress as for her servant, for seller as for buyer, for borrower as for lender, for debtor as for creditor.


The look on their faces testifies against them; they parade their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! They have brought disaster upon themselves.


They are worthless, the objects of mockery; when their judgment comes, they will perish.


Therefore this is what the Lord says about the prophets who are prophesying in my name: I did not send them, yet they are saying, “No sword or famine will touch this land.” Those same prophets will perish by sword and famine.


‘Therefore their path will become slippery; they will be banished to darkness and there they will fall. I will bring disaster on them in the year they are punished,’ declares the Lord.


Therefore the showers have been withheld, and no spring rains have fallen. Yet you have the brazen look of a prostitute; you refuse to blush with shame.


To this day they have not humbled themselves or shown reverence, nor have they followed my law and the decrees I set before you and your ancestors.

Therefore this is what the Lord says: ‘I will put obstacles before this people. Parents and children alike will stumble over them; neighbours and friends will perish.’

Ephraim will be laid waste on the day of reckoning. Among the tribes of Israel I proclaim what is certain.


The Lord within her is righteous; he does no wrong. Morning by morning he dispenses his justice, and every new day he does not fail, yet the unrighteous know no shame.


It is mine to avenge; I will repay. In due time their foot will slip; their day of disaster is near and their doom rushes upon them.’


Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things.
