Daughter Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard, like a hut in a cucumber field, like a city under siege.


I hear a cry as of a woman in labour, a groan as of one bearing her first child – the cry of Daughter Zion gasping for breath, stretching out her hands and saying, ‘Alas! I am fainting; my life is given over to murderers.’


How the Lord has covered Daughter Zion with the cloud of his anger! He has hurled down the splendour of Israel from heaven to earth; he has not remembered his footstool in the day of his anger.


What can I say for you? With what can I compare you, Daughter Jerusalem? To what can I liken you, that I may comfort you, Virgin Daughter Zion? Your wound is as deep as the sea. Who can heal you?


Those who once ate delicacies are destitute in the streets. Those brought up in royal purple now lie on ash heaps.


The most gentle and sensitive woman among you – so sensitive and gentle that she would not venture to touch the ground with the sole of her foot – will begrudge the husband she loves and her own son or daughter
