8 But as soon as Jeremiah finished telling all the people everything the Lord had commanded him to say, the priests, the prophets and all the people seized him and said, ‘You must die!

But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his words and scoffed at his prophets until the wrath of the Lord was aroused against his people and there was no remedy.


They will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you and will rescue you,’ declares the Lord.


They said, ‘Come, let’s make plans against Jeremiah; for the teaching of the law by the priest will not cease, nor will counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophets. So come, let’s attack him with our tongues and pay no attention to anything he says.’


But you, Lord, know all their plots to kill me. Do not forgive their crimes or blot out their sins from your sight. Let them be overthrown before you; deal with them in the time of your anger.


‘In vain I punished your people; they did not respond to correction. Your sword has devoured your prophets like a ravenous lion.


Now Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him there, saying, ‘Why do you prophesy as you do? You say, “This is what the Lord says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it.


When Jeremiah had finished telling the people all the words of the Lord their God – everything the Lord had sent him to tell them –


Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent a message to Jeroboam king of Israel: ‘Amos is raising a conspiracy against you in the very heart of Israel. The land cannot bear all his words.


The rest seized his servants, ill-treated them and killed them.


But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.


When they heard this, they were furious and wanted to put them to death.


Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him –


In her was found the blood of prophets and of God’s holy people, of all who have been slaughtered on the earth.’
