This temple will become a heap of rubble. All who pass by will be appalled and will scoff and say, “Why has the Lord done such a thing to this land and to this temple?”


Their land will be an object of horror and of lasting scorn; all who pass by will be appalled and will shake their heads.


Jerusalem and the towns of Judah, its kings and officials, to make them a ruin and an object of horror and scorn, a curse – as they are today;


I swear by myself,’ declares the Lord, ‘that Bozrah will become a ruin and a curse, an object of horror and reproach; and all its towns will be in ruins for ever.’


Because of the Lord’s anger she will not be inhabited but will be completely desolate. All who pass Babylon will be appalled; they will scoff because of all her wounds.


The merchants among the nations scoff at you; you have come to a horrible end and will be no more.” ’


I myself will lay waste the land, so that your enemies who live there will be appalled.


You have observed the statutes of Omri and all the practices of Ahab’s house; you have followed their traditions. Therefore I will give you over to ruin and your people to derision; you will bear the scorn of the nations.’


This is the city of revelry that lived in safety. She said to herself, ‘I am the one! And there is none besides me.’ What a ruin she has become, a lair for wild beasts! All who pass by her scoff and shake their fists.


You will become a thing of horror, a byword and an object of ridicule among all the peoples where the Lord will drive you.


Your children who follow you in later generations and foreigners who come from distant lands will see the calamities that have fallen on the land and the diseases with which the Lord has afflicted it.
