Your men will fall by the sword, your warriors in battle.


The gates of Zion will lament and mourn; destitute, she will sit on the ground.


In that day seven women will take hold of one man and say, ‘We will eat our own food and provide our own clothes; only let us be called by your name. Take away our disgrace!’


For this is what the Lord says about the sons and daughters born in this land and about the women who are their mothers and the men who are their fathers:


So give their children over to famine; hand them over to the power of the sword. Let their wives be made childless and widows; let their men be put to death, their young men slain by the sword in battle.


I will send destroyers against you, each man with his weapons, and they will cut up your fine cedar beams and throw them into the fire.


‘Tell this to the nations, proclaim concerning Jerusalem: “A besieging army is coming from a distant land, raising a war cry against the cities of Judah.


Therefore a lion from the forest will attack them, a wolf from the desert will ravage them, a leopard will lie in wait near their towns to tear to pieces any who venture out, for their rebellion is great and their backslidings many.


Put on sackcloth, my people, and roll in ashes; mourn with bitter wailing as for an only son, for suddenly the destroyer will come upon us.


We have become fatherless, our mothers are widows.


There is a conspiracy of her princes within her like a roaring lion tearing its prey; they devour people, take treasures and precious things and make many widows within her.


You stumble day and night, and the prophets stumble with you. So I will destroy your mother –


For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth.
