‘Have pity on me, my friends, have pity, for the hand of God has struck me.


Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none.


So Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and bowed down and kissed him. They greeted each other and then went into the tent.


These double calamities have come upon you – who can comfort you? – ruin and destruction, famine and sword – who can console you?


I will smash them one against the other, parents and children alike, declares the Lord. I will allow no pity or mercy or compassion to keep me from destroying them.” ’


For this is what the Lord says: ‘Do not enter a house where there is a funeral meal; do not go to mourn or show sympathy, because I have withdrawn my blessing, my love and my pity from this people,’ declares the Lord.


After that, declares the Lord, I will give Zedekiah king of Judah, his officials and the people in this city who survive the plague, sword and famine, into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and to their enemies who want to kill them. He will put them to the sword; he will show them no mercy or pity or compassion.”


Zion stretches out her hands, but there is no-one to comfort her. The Lord has decreed for Jacob that his neighbours become his foes; Jerusalem has become an unclean thing among them.


All who see you will flee from you and say, “Nineveh is in ruins – who will mourn for her?” Where can I find anyone to comfort you?’


So they turned in there and went to the house of the young Levite at Micah’s place and greeted him.
