Do not hold against us the sins of past generations; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need.


I will punish the world for its evil, the wicked for their sins. I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty and will humble the pride of the ruthless.


You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon.


The Lord Almighty has a day in store for all the proud and lofty, for all that is exalted (and they will be humbled),


The ruined city lies desolate; the entrance to every house is barred.


You have made the city a heap of rubble, the fortified town a ruin, the foreigners’ stronghold a city no more; it will never be rebuilt.


Though hail flattens the forest and the city is levelled completely,


‘Go down, sit in the dust, Virgin Daughter Babylon; sit on the ground without a throne, queen city of the Babylonians. No more will you be called tender or delicate.


Babylon will be a heap of ruins, a haunt of jackals, an object of horror and scorn, a place where no-one lives.


Then say, “So will Babylon sink to rise no more because of the disaster I will bring on her. And her people will fall.” ’ The words of Jeremiah end here.


Without pity the Lord has swallowed up all the dwellings of Jacob; in his wrath he has torn down the strongholds of Daughter Judah. He has brought her kingdom and its princes down to the ground in dishonour.


The hooves of his horses will trample all your streets; he will kill your people with the sword, and your strong pillars will fall to the ground.


Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendour. So I threw you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings.


With a mighty voice he shouted: ‘ “Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!” She has become a dwelling for demons and a haunt for every impure spirit, a haunt for every unclean bird, a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal.
