1 ‘Hear this, you priests! Pay attention, you Israelites! Listen, royal house! This judgment is against you: you have been a snare at Mizpah, a net spread out on Tabor.

From the time I brought your ancestors up from Egypt until today, I warned them again and again, saying, ‘Obey me.’


Say to the king and to the queen mother, ‘Come down from your thrones, for your glorious crowns will fall from your heads.’


‘As surely as I live,’ declares the King, whose name is the Lord Almighty, ‘one will come who is like Tabor among the mountains, like Carmel by the sea.


So will it happen to you, Bethel, because your wickedness is great. When that day dawns, the king of Israel will be completely destroyed.


Like a bear robbed of her cubs, I will attack them and rip them open; like a lion I will devour them – a wild animal will tear them apart.


Hear the word of the Lord, you Israelites, because the Lord has a charge to bring against you who live in the land: ‘There is no faithfulness, no love, no acknowledgment of God in the land.


As marauders lie in ambush for a victim, so do bands of priests; they murder on the road to Shechem, carrying out their wicked schemes.


The prophet, along with my God, is the watchman over Ephraim, yet snares await him on all his paths, and hostility in the house of his God.


Hear this, you elders; listen, all who live in the land. Has anything like this ever happened in your days or in the days of your ancestors?


Hear this word, people of Israel, the word the Lord has spoken against you – against the whole family I brought up out of Egypt:


‘The high places of Isaac will be destroyed and the sanctuaries of Israel will be ruined; with my sword I will rise against the house of Jeroboam.’


Then I said, ‘Listen, you leaders of Jacob, you rulers of Israel. Should you not embrace justice,


Hear this, you leaders of Jacob, you rulers of Israel, who despise justice and distort all that is right;


The faithful have been swept from the land; not one upright person remains. Everyone lies in wait to shed blood; they hunt each other with nets.


‘A son honours his father, and a slave his master. If I am a father, where is the honour due to me? If I am a master, where is the respect due to me?’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘It is you priests who show contempt for my name. ‘But you ask, “How have we shown contempt for your name?”


‘And now, you priests, this warning is for you.


When they told Sisera that Barak son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor,


She sent for Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali and said to him, ‘The Lord, the God of Israel, commands you: “Go, take with you ten thousand men of Naphtali and Zebulun and lead them up to Mount Tabor.


From year to year he went on a circuit from Bethel to Gilgal to Mizpah, judging Israel in all those places.


Then Samuel said, ‘Assemble all Israel at Mizpah, and I will intercede with the Lord for you.’


When they had assembled at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out before the Lord. On that day they fasted and there they confessed, ‘We have sinned against the Lord.’ Now Samuel was serving as leader of Israel at Mizpah.
