Abraham replied, ‘I said to myself, “There is surely no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.”


No-one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?’


if you are honest men, let one of your brothers stay here in prison, while the rest of you go and take grain back for your starving households.


But the earlier governors – those preceding me – placed a heavy burden on the people and took forty shekels of silver from them in addition to food and wine. Their assistants also lorded it over the people. But out of reverence for God I did not act like that.


So I continued, ‘What you are doing is not right. Shouldn’t you walk in the fear of our God to avoid the reproach of our Gentile enemies?


In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil.


The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live.


But select capable men from all the people – men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain – and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.
