‘In my dream I saw seven ears of corn, full and good, growing on a single stalk.


The thin ears of corn swallowed up the seven good ears. I told this to the magicians, but none of them could explain it to me.’


After them, seven other ears of corn sprouted – thin and scorched by the east wind.


Their people, drained of power, are dismayed and put to shame. They are like plants in the field, like tender green shoots, like grass sprouting on the roof, scorched before it grows up.


even though he thrives among his brothers. An east wind from the Lord will come, blowing in from the desert; his spring will fail and his well dry up. His storehouse will be plundered of all its treasures.


‘They sow the wind and reap the whirlwind. The stalk has no head; it will produce no flour. Were it to yield grain, foreigners would swallow it up.


Ephraim is blighted, their root is withered, they yield no fruit. Even if they bear children, I will slay their cherished offspring.’
