7 Meanwhile, Jacob’s sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked and furious, because Shechem had done an outrageous thing in Israel by sleeping with Jacob’s daughter – a thing that should not be done.

Then Abimelek called Abraham in and said, ‘What have you done to us? How have I wronged you that you have brought such great guilt upon me and my kingdom? You have done things to me that should never be done.’


Then Shechem’s father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob.


But Hamor said to them, ‘My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.


Jacob brought with him to Egypt his sons and grandsons and his daughters and granddaughters – all his offspring.


When King David heard all this, he was furious.


Your statutes, Lord, stand firm; holiness adorns your house for endless days.


I saw among the simple, I noticed among the young men, a youth who had no sense.


For they have done outrageous things in Israel; they have committed adultery with their neighbours’ wives, and in my name they have uttered lies – which I did not authorise. I know it and am a witness to it,’ declares the Lord.


‘ “If the whole Israelite community sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord’s commands, even though the community is unaware of the matter, when they realise their guilt

We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did – and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.


Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.


But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.


If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the young woman’s virginity can be found,


she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done an outrageous thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house. You must purge the evil from among you.


No Israelite man or woman is to become a shrine-prostitute.


Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.


Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also busybodies who talk nonsense, saying things they ought not to.


Marriage should be honoured by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.


Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.


Whoever is caught with the devoted things shall be destroyed by fire, along with all that belongs to him. He has violated the covenant of the Lord and has done an outrageous thing in Israel!” ’


But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.


I took my concubine, cut her into pieces and sent one piece to each region of Israel’s inheritance, because they committed this lewd and outrageous act in Israel.
