Afterwards Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah near Mamre (which is at Hebron) in the land of Canaan.


‘I am a foreigner and stranger among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so that I can bury my dead.’


Then he breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people, old and full of years. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.


but when I rest with my fathers, carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried.’ ‘I will do as you say,’ he said.


Then he gave them these instructions: ‘I am about to be gathered to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite,


There Abraham and his wife Sarah were buried, there Isaac and his wife Rebekah were buried, and there I buried Leah.


they carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite.


When David was old and full of years, he made his son Solomon king over Israel.


He died at a good old age, having enjoyed long life, wealth and honour. His son Solomon succeeded him as king.


Now I will gather you to your ancestors, and you will be buried in peace. Your eyes will not see all the disaster I am going to bring on this place and on those who live here.” ’ So they took her answer back to the king.


It leaves a glistening wake behind it; one would think the deep had white hair.


And so Job died, an old man and full of years.


You will come to the grave in full vigour, like sheaves gathered in season.

‘Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his ancestors and his body decayed.


And the Lord said to Moses: ‘You are going to rest with your ancestors, and these people will soon prostitute themselves to the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will forsake me and break the covenant I made with them.


After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel.
