The first centres of his kingdom were Babylon, Uruk, Akkad and Kalneh, in Shinar.


For a full 180 days he displayed the vast wealth of his kingdom and the splendour and glory of his majesty.


Praise the Lord, my soul. Lord my God, you are very great; you are clothed with splendour and majesty.


People who have wealth but lack understanding are like the beasts that perish.


They scoff, and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression.


When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.


Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.


Pride brings a person low, but the lowly in spirit gain honour.


Babylon, the jewel of kingdoms, the pride and glory of the Babylonians, will be overthrown by God like Sodom and Gomorrah.


Speak to him and say: “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘ “I am against you, Pharaoh king of Egypt, you great monster lying among your streams. You say, ‘The Nile belongs to me; I made it for myself.’


Even as the words were on his lips, a voice came from heaven, ‘This is what is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar: your royal authority has been taken from you.


Then they sweep past like the wind and go on – guilty people, whose own strength is their god.’


For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.’


If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, “Give this person your seat.” Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place.


So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.


In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility towards one another, because, ‘God opposes the proud but shows favour to the humble.’


A second angel followed and said, ‘ “Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great,” which made all the nations drink the maddening wine of her adulteries.’


The great city split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed. God remembered Babylon the Great and gave her the cup filled with the wine of the fury of his wrath.


The name written on her forehead was a mystery: Babylon the great the mother of prostitutes and of the abominations of the earth.


Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off and cry: ‘ “Woe! Woe to you, great city, you mighty city of Babylon! In one hour your doom has come!”


Then a mighty angel picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea, and said: ‘With such violence the great city of Babylon will be thrown down, never to be found again.
