That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither – whatever they do prospers.


‘Because he loves me,’ says the Lord, ‘I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.


The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.


Moreover, at Daniel’s request the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego chief ministers over the province of Babylon, while Daniel himself remained at the royal court.


King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold, sixty cubits high and six cubits wide, and set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon.


But there are some Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon – Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego – who pay no attention to you, Your Majesty. They neither serve your gods nor worship the image of gold you have set up.’


Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honour the one who serves me.


What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?


‘Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: “I promised that members of your family would minister before me for ever.” But now the Lord declares: “Far be it from me! Those who honour me I will honour, but those who despise me will be disdained.
