When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them.


Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.’


I was ceremonially clean when they found me in the temple courts doing this. There was no crowd with me, nor was I involved in any disturbance.


‘We have found this man to be a troublemaker, stirring up riots among the Jews all over the world. He is a ringleader of the Nazarene sect


Then Paul made his defence: ‘I have done nothing wrong against the Jewish law or against the temple or against Caesar.’


Three days later he called together the local Jewish leaders. When they had assembled, Paul said to them: ‘My brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or against the customs of our ancestors, I was arrested in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans.
