The sceptre of the wicked will not remain over the land allotted to the righteous, for then the righteous might use their hands to do evil.


At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,


Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,


On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much


‘Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.


Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour – when darkness reigns.’


Remember what I told you: “A servant is not greater than his master.” If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.


They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.


This they did, sending their gift to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.


He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword.


Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.’


Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace and was strengthened. Living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers.
