The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, ‘Didn’t I tell you that he never prophesies anything good about me, but only bad?’


The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat, ‘There is still one prophet through whom we can enquire of the Lord, but I hate him because he never prophesies anything good about me, but always bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.’ ‘The king should not say such a thing,’ Jehoshaphat replied.


The Lord replied to Moses, ‘Whoever has sinned against me I will blot out of my book.


to whom he said, ‘This is the resting-place, let the weary rest’; and, ‘This is the place of repose’ – but they would not listen.


They say to the seers, ‘See no more visions!’ and to the prophets, ‘Give us no more visions of what is right! Tell us pleasant things, prophesy illusions.


They said, ‘Come, let’s make plans against Jeremiah; for the teaching of the law by the priest will not cease, nor will counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophets. So come, let’s attack him with our tongues and pay no attention to anything he says.’


So do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your interpreters of dreams, your mediums or your sorcerers who tell you, “You will not serve the king of Babylon.”


Yes, this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘Do not let the prophets and diviners among you deceive you. Do not listen to the dreams you encourage them to have.


the prophets prophesy lies, the priests rule by their own authority, and my people love it this way. But what will you do in the end?


If a liar and deceiver comes and says, “I will prophesy for you plenty of wine and beer,” that would be just the prophet for this people!


The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.


Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.


Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me!


(All the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas.)


And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.


My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power,


Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth?


for the sexually immoral, for those practising homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers – and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine


What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus.


They said to you, ‘In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.’
