Ben-Hadad agreed with King Asa and sent the commanders of his forces against the towns of Israel. They conquered Ijon, Dan, Abel Maim and all the store cities of Naphtali.


Ahaz took some of the things from the temple of the Lord and from the royal palace and from the officials and presented them to the king of Assyria, but that did not help him.


Therefore the Lord his God delivered him into the hands of the king of Aram. The Arameans defeated him and took many of his people as prisoners and brought them to Damascus. He was also given into the hands of the king of Israel, who inflicted heavy casualties on him.


“Has not Kalno fared like Carchemish? Is not Hamath like Arpad, and Samaria like Damascus?


A prophecy against Damascus: ‘See, Damascus will no longer be a city but will become a heap of ruins.


Elam takes up the quiver, with her charioteers and horses; Kir uncovers the shield.


‘It is true, Lord, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste all these peoples and their lands.


for before the boy knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste.


‘The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with dressed stone; the fig-trees have been felled, but we will replace them with cedars.’


But the Lord has strengthened Rezin’s foes against them and has spurred their enemies on.


‘Are not you Israelites the same to me as the Cushites?’ declares the Lord. ‘Did I not bring Israel up from Egypt, the Philistines from Caphtor and the Arameans from Kir?
