The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.


And he killed an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits tall. The Egyptian had in his hand a spear like a weaver’s beam, and he went down to him with a staff, wrested the spear from the Egyptian’s hand, and killed him with his own spear.


It is He who sits upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants are as grasshoppers, who stretches out the heavens as a curtain, and spreads them out as a tent to dwell in.


They went up by the Negev and came to Hebron where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the sons of Anak, were (now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt).


However, the people are strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are fortified and very great, and also we saw the sons of Anak there.


And the whole assembly lifted up their voices and cried, and the people wept that night.


Where shall we go up? Our brothers have discouraged our hearts, saying, ‘The people are greater and taller than we. The cities are great and walled up to heaven. And moreover, we have seen the sons of the Anakites there.’ ”


(The Emites lived there in times past, a people as great and as many and as tall as the Anakites.


(For only Og, king of Bashan, remained of the remnant of the Rephaim. Behold, his bed was a bed of iron. Is it not in Rabbah of the Ammonites? It is nine cubits long and four cubits wide, according to the cubit of a man.)


a great and tall people, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know and of whom you have heard it said, “Who can stand before the sons of Anak?”


At that time Joshua came and wiped out the Anakites from the hill country: from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel. Joshua utterly destroyed them and their cities.


So now, give me this hill country that the Lord spoke about on that day. That day you heard that the Anakites live there in large, fortified cities. Perhaps the Lord will be with me, and I will drive them out, as the Lord said.”


Caleb drove out from there three Anakites: Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, descendants of Anak.


When all Israel’s fighting men saw the man, they fled from him, and were very afraid.


When the Philistine looked and saw David, he despised him. For he was a youth and ruddy with a handsome appearance.
