He left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, “Please let me kiss my father and mother, and then I will follow you.” And he said to him, “Go back, for what have I done to you?”


Another of His other disciples said to Him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”


As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s station. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” And he rose and followed Him.


As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s station, and He said to him, “Follow Me.” And he rose and followed Him.


For this son of mine was dead, and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to be merry.


But it was fitting to be merry and be glad, for this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ ”


He said to another man, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”


Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But you go and preach the kingdom of God.”


The next day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip, and said to him, “Follow Me.”


He said this, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. When He had said this, He said to him, “Follow Me.”


Jesus said to him, “If it is My will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow Me!”


And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,


even when we were dead in sins, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),


Therefore He says: “Awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”


And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has resurrected together with Him, having forgiven you all sins.


But she who lives in pleasure is dead while she lives.
