On my bed at night I sought him whom my soul loves; I sought him, but did not find him.


I am sleeping, but my heart is awake. A sound! My lover is knocking. Open the door for me, my sister, my beloved, my dove and pure one; for my head is wet with dew, my hair with the drops of the night.


I have taken off my linen garment. How can I now put it back on? I have already washed my feet. How can I dirty them again?


For the vision is yet for an appointed time; but it speaks of the end, and does not lie. If it delays, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay.


But if that evil servant says in his heart, ‘My master delays his coming,’


“After a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them.


But the wise took jars of oil with their lamps.


“But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Behold, the bridegroom is coming! Come out to meet him!’


Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “So, could you not keep watch with Me one hour?


Again, He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.


The people waited for Zechariah, and wondered why he waited so long in the temple.


But if that servant says in his heart, ‘My master delays his coming,’ and begins to beat the house servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk,


I tell you, He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?”


He began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard, and leased it to vinedressers, and went to a distant country for a long time.


Furthermore, knowing the time, now is the moment to awake from sleep. For now our salvation is nearer than when we believed.


Therefore He says: “Awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”


Be sober and watchful, because your adversary the devil walks around as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.


But hold firmly what you have until I come.
