I will incline my ear to a parable; I will reveal my riddle with the music of the harp.


I will open my mouth in a parable; I will speak mysteries of old,


Son of man, put forth a riddle, and speak a parable to the house of Israel,


Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! They say of me, ‘Does he not speak parables?’ ”


In that day they will take up a taunt against you, and they will wail a wailing lament, and say: “We are totally ruined! He diminishes the portion of my people; how He removes it from me! To a traitor He reassigns our fields!”


Shall not all these take up a taunt against him, with satire and riddles, and say, “Woe to him who increases what is not his—how long? And to him who loads himself with heavy debts!”


While he sowed, some seeds fell beside the path, and the birds came and devoured them.


When Jesus finished these parables, He departed from there.


Jesus spoke to them again by parables, saying,


“Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: When its branch becomes tender and grows leaves, you know that summer is near.


He began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a pit for the winepress, and built a tower, and rented it to vinedressers, and went to a far country.


Then they tried to seize Him, but feared the people, for they knew that He had spoken the parable against them. So they left Him and went their way.


So He called them to Him and said to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan?


Then He said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables?


With many such parables He spoke the word to them as they were able to hear it.


Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You telling this parable to us, or to everyone?”


He said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but to others they are in parables, so that ‘seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’


“I have told you these things in proverbs. But the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in proverbs, for I will speak to you plainly about the Father.
