Moses said to Aaron and to his sons, “Boil the flesh at the entrance of the tent of meeting and eat it there with the bread that is in the basket of consecrations just as I commanded, saying, ‘Aaron and his sons shall eat it.’


But He said to them, “Have you not read what David and those who were with him did when he was hungry,


Or have you not read in the law how on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, but are blameless?

He went into the house of God, and took and ate the ritual bread, and also gave it to those who were with him. This was not lawful, but for the priests only to eat.”


A tabernacle was made. In the first outer part of the tabernacle, called the Holy Place, were the lampstand, the table, and the showbread.


The priest answered David and said, “There is no common bread at hand. But there is holy bread, if the young men have indeed been kept from women.”


So the priest gave him holy bread. For there was no bread there but the showbread that was removed from before the Lord, in order to place hot bread there on the day when it was taken away.
