“They do all their works to be seen by men. They make their Scripture boxes broad and lengthen the tassels on their prayer shawls.


“Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces so they may appear to men to be fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward.


so that you will not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.


Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.


I fast twice a week, and I tithe of all that I earn.’


For, being ignorant of God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own righteousness, they did not submit to the righteousness of God.
