So he took a piece of broken pottery with which to scrape himself while he was sitting among the ashes.


The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions are broken.


For I eat ashes like bread and mingle my drink with tears,


Arise, O  Lord; save me, O my God! For You have struck all my enemies on the cheek; You have broken the teeth of the wicked.


O God, break their teeth in their mouths; break out the fangs of the young lions, O  Lord!


The bread of deceit is sweet to a man, but afterward is his mouth filled with gravel.


O daughter of my people, gird yourself with sackcloth and wallow in ashes. Mourn as for an only son, a most bitter lamentation; for the destroyer shall suddenly come upon us.


When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he arose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself in sackcloth, and sat in ashes.


“What man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone?
