He burned the house of the Lord, the king’s house, and all the houses of Jerusalem. Every great house he burned with fire.


Why do You hide Your face and regard me as Your enemy?


He has also kindled His wrath against me, and He counts me as one of His enemies.


You have broken down all his walls; You have brought his strongholds to ruin.


All who pass by plunder him; he is a reproach to his neighbors.


Yet I will distress Ariel, and she shall be a city of lamenting and sorrow, and she shall be as an Ariel to me.


But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit; therefore, He turned Himself to be their enemy, and He fought against them.


Then the Lord said to me: Even though Moses and Samuel were to stand before Me, yet My heart would not be with this people. Cast them out of My sight and let them go!


Thus says the Lord God of Israel: Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands with which you fight against the king of Babylon and against the Chaldeans who besiege you outside the walls; and I will assemble them into the midst of this city.


All your lovers have forgotten you; they do not seek you; for I have wounded you with the wound of an enemy, with the chastisement of a cruel one, because of the multitude of your iniquities, because your sins are numerous.

The Lord has swallowed up without mercy all the habitations of Jacob; in His wrath He has thrown down the strongholds of the daughter of Judah; He has brought them down to the ground; He has profaned the kingdom and its princes.


He has bent His bow like an enemy, with his right hand set like an adversary; He has killed all who were pleasant to His eye; in the tabernacle of the daughter of Zion, He has poured out His fury like fire.


And He spread it before me. And there was writing on the inside and on the outside, and written on it were words of lamentation and mourning and woe.


Then said Samuel, “Why then do you ask me, since the Lord has departed from you and has become your enemy?
