22 Then the men in the city came out to engage them in battle, so they were now in the middle, with Israel on each side. Israel struck them down until neither survivors nor escapees were left.

that the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite is but for a moment?


and when the Lord your God delivers them before you and you strike them down, then you must utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them nor show mercy to them.


When they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor upon a woman with child, and they shall not escape.


Joshua took Makkedah that day and struck it and its king with the edge of the sword. He destroyed it and all life within it. He did not leave any survivors. He did to the king of Makkedah just as he did to the king of Jericho.


They destroyed all that was in the city: man and woman, young and old, and oxen, sheep, and donkey with the edge of the sword.


When Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had captured the city and that smoke rose from it, they turned and struck down the men of Ai.


They took the king of Ai alive and brought him to Joshua.


When you have seized the city, set it on fire. Act according to the word of the Lord. See, I have commanded you.”
