When Joab saw that the battlefronts were both before and behind him, he selected some from the best men in Israel and lined them up opposite Aram.


Now when King Adoni-Zedek of Jerusalem heard that Joshua captured Ai and destroyed it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them,


So when the men of Ai looked back, behold, the smoke of the city ascended to heaven! So they had no power to feel this way or that way, and the people who had fled into the wilderness had turned back toward their pursuers.


Then the men in the city came out to engage them in battle, so they were now in the middle, with Israel on each side. Israel struck them down until neither survivors nor escapees were left.
