14 When the king of Ai saw this, the men of the city hurriedly got up early and went out to engage Israel in battle at the assembly point near the Arabah. Yet he did not know that there was an ambush for him behind the city.

For no one knows his appointed time. Like fish caught in a cruel net, like birds caught in a snare, so people are ensnared in an evil time, when it suddenly falls on them.


Surely the princes of Zoan are fools; the counsel of the wise counselors of Pharaoh has become stupid. How can you say to Pharaoh, “I am a son of the wise, a son of ancient kings?”


The princes of Zoan have become fools; the princes of Memphis are deceived; they have also seduced Egypt, even those who are the cornerstone of her tribes.


While the word was in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven: “O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: The kingdom has departed from you!


and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.


the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not look for him and in an hour he is not aware of


These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel on the other side of the Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel and Laban and Hazeroth and Dizahab.


So they stationed the people, all the army that was on the north of the city, and its rear guard on the west of the city, and Joshua spent that night in the midst of the valley.


So Joshua and all Israel allowed themselves to be beaten before them, and they fled in the direction of the wilderness.


All the people who were in Ai were assembled to pursue them, so they pursued Joshua and were drawn away from the city.


I and all the people who are with me will approach the city. When they come out to engage us as before, we will flee from them.


And in their greed they will exploit you with deceptive words. Their judgment, made long ago, does not linger, and their destruction does not slumber.


So the ambushing force rushed on and attacked Gibeah. They struck down the whole city with the edge of the sword.
