Joshua 22:9 - Modern English Version

9 So the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh left the Israelites at Shiloh in the land of Canaan to go to the land of Gilead, the land of their possession, according to the word of the Lord through Moses.

He installed him as king over Gilead, the Ashurites, Jezreel, Ephraim, and Benjamin, over Israel in its entirety.


And he dwelt toward the east as far as the entrance to the wilderness from the Euphrates, for their cattle were abundant in the land of Gilead.


Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine; Ephraim also is My helmet; Judah is My scepter;


Now the Reubenites and the Gadites had a very great number of livestock, and when they saw the land of Jazer and behold, the land of Gilead was a place for livestock,


Moses said to them, “If you will do this thing, if you will be armed before the Lord for war,


and the land is subdued before the Lord, then after that you will return and be exempt before the Lord and before Israel, and this land will be your possession before the Lord.


Our children, our wives, our flocks, and all our livestock will be there in the cities of Gilead,


And Moses said to them, “If the Gadites and the Reubenites will cross over the Jordan with you, each man armed for battle before the Lord, and the land will be subdued before you, you are to give them the land of Gilead as a possession.


Then I commanded you at that time, saying, “The Lord your God has given you this land to possess it. All you men of valor shall pass over armed before your brothers, the Israelites.


until the Lord has given rest to your brothers, as well as to you, and until they also possess the land which the Lord your God has given them beyond the Jordan. Then each of you shall return to his possession which I have given you.”


Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho. Then the Lord showed him all the land—from Gilead to Dan,


Moses had also given them Gilead, the territory of the Geshurites and Maacathites, all of Mount Hermon, and all of Bashan as far as Salekah,


Their territory was Jazer, all the cities of Gilead, and half of the Ammonite land as far as Aroer, which is east of Rabbah,


half of Gilead, Ashtaroth, and Edrei: cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. This was for the descendants of Machir son of Manasseh, half of the descendants of Machir by their clans.


The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh came near the Jordan in the land of Canaan and built a very large altar by the Jordan.


All the Israelites from Dan to Beer-sheba, and also from the land of Gilead, went out and gathered together in an assembly as one man before the Lord at Mizpah.


Gilead stayed beyond the Jordan. As for Dan, why did he stay with the ships? Asher stayed by the seacoast and settled by its bays.
