But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him, “Behold, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man’s wife.”


When Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the land, saw her, he took her and lay with her and defiled her.


But they said, “Should he treat our sister like a prostitute?”


Surely as a wife treacherously departs from her husband, so you have dealt treacherously with Me, O house of Israel, says the Lord.


You have been as a wife who commits adultery, who takes strangers instead of her husband!


Therefore, O harlot, hear the word of the Lord.


This is the law of jealousies, when a wife goes astray to another instead of her husband, and is defiled,


And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”


Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”


The woman answered, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband,’


The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.


So then, she will be called an adulteress if she marries another man while her husband lives. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she would not be an adulteress if she marries another man.


Marriage is to be honored among everyone, and the bed undefiled. But God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.


Moreover I have also acquired Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, to be my wife, in order to preserve the name of the deceased man for his inheritance, so that his name will not be cut off from among his brothers or from his town. You are witnesses this day.”
