He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; he was brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.


But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to Him, “I adjure You by the living God, tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God.”


Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium, and gathered the whole detachment of soldiers before Him.


He questioned Him with many words, but He gave no answer.


Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium. It was early. Yet they themselves did not enter the Praetorium, so that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.


Again Pilate entered the Praetorium, called Jesus, and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”


Jesus answered him, “Are you speaking of your own accord, or did others tell you about Me?”


Therefore Pilate said to Him, “Then are You a king?” Jesus answered, “You say correctly that I am a king. For this reason I was born, and for this reason I came into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”


Pilate said to Him, “Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have power to release You, and power to crucify You?”


When Pilate heard these words, he was more afraid,


Jesus answered, “Though I bear witness of Myself, My testimony is true. For I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I came from or where I am going.


and not in any way frightened by your adversaries. This is a sign to them of their destruction, but to you of salvation, and that from God.


Then the woman went to her husband and said, “A man of God came to me. He looked like a very fearsome angel of God. I did not ask him where he was from, and he did not tell me his name,
