I opened to my lover, but my beloved had turned away and was gone. My soul failed me when he spoke. I searched for him, but I did not find him; I called out to him, but he did not answer me.


For you have the poor always with you, but you do not always have Me.


You always have the poor with you, and whenever you wish, you may do good to them. But you will not always have Me.


Then Jesus said to them, “Yet a little while the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. He who walks in darkness does not know where he is going.


“Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek Me. And as I said to the Jews, so now I tell you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’


Again, Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will seek Me, and you will die in your sins. Where I am going, you cannot come.”


For the poor will never cease from being in the land. Therefore, I command you, saying, “You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and needy in your land.”
