The offspring of Israel separated themselves from all the foreigners and then stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers.


He who conceals his sins will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will find mercy.


inflaming yourselves with idols under every green tree, slaying the children in the valleys under the clefts of the rocks?


Thus says the Lord to this people: Even so they have loved to wander; they have not restrained their feet. Therefore, the Lord does not accept them; He will now remember their iniquity and punish their sins.


We acknowledge, O  Lord, our wickedness and the iniquity of our fathers, for we have sinned against You.


For long ago I have broken your yoke and burst your bonds; and you said, “I will not serve.” For upon every high hill and under every green tree you wander, playing the harlot.


Withhold your foot from being unshod and your throat from thirst. But you said, “There is no hope. No! For I have loved strangers, and after them I will go.”


Lift up your eyes to the high places, and see! Where have you not been ravished? In the roads you have sat for them as the Arabian in the wilderness. And you have polluted the land with your harlotry and with your wickedness.


We lie down in our shame, and our humiliation covers us. For we have sinned against the Lord our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God.”


The Lord said also to me in the days of Josiah the king: Have you seen that which backsliding Israel has done? She has gone up on every high mountain and under every green tree, and there has played the harlot.


But they did not listen, nor incline their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward and not forward.


Yet they did not listen to Me, nor incline their ear, but hardened their neck. They did worse than their fathers.


But you trusted in your own beauty, and played the harlot because of your renown, and poured out your fornications on every willing passerby.


I will again return to My place until they acknowledge their offense and seek My face. In their affliction they will earnestly seek Me.


You must utterly destroy all the places where the nations which you will possess served their gods, on the high mountains, and on the hills, and under every green tree.
