You have shown Your people hardship; You have given us wine to drink that makes us stagger.


Reproach has broken my heart, and I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none.


Woe to the proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower which is at the head of the fertile valley of those who are overcome with wine!


Be delayed and wait, blind yourselves and be blind. They are drunk, but not with wine. They stagger, but not with strong drink.


Therefore please hear this, you afflicted who are drunk but not with wine.


And I said: “Woe is me! For I am undone because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips. For my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of Hosts.”


But if I say, “I will not make mention of Him nor speak anymore in His name,” then His word was in my heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones; and I was weary of forbearing it, and I could not endure it.


When they heard all the words, they turned to one another in fear and said to Baruch, “We will surely tell the king of all these words.”


The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule by their own authority; and My people love to have it so. Yet what will you do in the end?


My sorrow is beyond healing; my heart is faint within me.


Oh, that my head were waters and my eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!


He has filled me with bitterness, He has sated me with wormwood.


Thus says the Lord God: Woe to the foolish prophets who follow their own spirit and have seen nothing!


And the Lord said to him, “Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan for all the abominations that are done in its midst.”


Utterly slay old and young, both maidens and little children, and women. But do not touch any man on whom is the mark. And begin at My sanctuary.” Then they began with the elders who were before the temple.


Then I, Daniel, fainted and was sick for some days. Afterward I rose up again and did the king’s business. So I was astonished at the vision, but there was none to explain it.


I heard, and my body trembled; my lips quivered at the sound; rottenness entered my bones; my legs tremble beneath me. Yet I will wait quietly for the day when calamity comes on the people invading us.


I was alive without the law once, but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.
