Then Nehemiah the magistrate, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who were teaching the people said to all the people, “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Stop mourning and weeping.” (This was because all the people wept when they heard the words of the Law.)


My harp is turned to mourning, and my flute to the voice of those who weep.


Rivers of water run down from my eyes, because they keep not Your law.


Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep Your word.


It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I might learn Your statutes.


Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful, and the end of joy is grief.


And I said of frivolous fun, “They are only senseless ideas,” and regarding selfish pleasure, “What purpose is this?”


Then the virgin shall rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together; for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.


They will come with weeping, and with supplications I will lead them. I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters, in a straight way in which they shall not stumble. For I am a Father to Israel, and Ephraim is My firstborn.


The joy of our hearts has ceased; our dancing has turned into mourning.
