10 Like grapes in the wilderness, I found Israel. Like the first fruit on the fig tree in its first season, I saw your fathers. But they went to Baal-peor and consecrated themselves to a thing of shame, and they became an abomination like the thing they loved.

The sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat were seen as minor for him to walk in, for he took Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians, as his wife and went and served Baal and worshipped him.


There they burned incense on all the high places, as the nations did whom the Lord had carried away before them. And they did wicked things to provoke the Lord to anger,


Those who make them are like them; so is everyone who trusts in them.


So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts, to walk in their own counsels.


What is that coming up from the wilderness, like columns of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all the scented powders of the merchant?


and the fading flower of its glorious beauty, which is at the head of the fertile valley, shall be like a first-ripe fig before the summer, which when one sees, while it is yet in his hand, he eats it up.


For according to the number of your cities are your gods, O Judah. And according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem you have set up altars to that shameful thing, even altars to burn incense to Baal.


One basket had very good figs, even like the figs that are first ripe, and the other basket had very rotten figs, which were so rotten they could not be eaten.


For shame has devoured the labor of our fathers from our youth, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.


We lie down in our shame, and our humiliation covers us. For we have sinned against the Lord our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God.”


Thus says the Lord: The people who survived the sword found grace in the wilderness, when I went to give Israel rest.


The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule by their own authority; and My people love to have it so. Yet what will you do in the end?


But they rebelled against Me and would not listen to Me. They did not cast away the abominations of their eyes, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt. Then I said I will pour out My fury upon them, to accomplish My anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.


When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son.


I knew you in the wilderness, in the land of great drought.


From there, I will give her vineyards to her, and the Valley of Achor as a door of hope. She will respond there as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.


I will not punish your daughters when they play the whore, nor your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery. For the men separate themselves with whores, and they sacrifice with cult prostitutes. A people without understanding will come to ruin.


Their drink has soured, they have played the whore continually. Her rulers dearly love shame.


Burn leavened bread as a thank offering; announce your voluntary offerings loudly, for so you love to do, O Israelites, says the Lord God.


Woe is me! Because I am as the gathering of summer fruit, as the gleaning of grapes; there is no cluster to eat, no early fig that my soul desires.


And it will be for you a tassel, and you will see it, and you will remember all the commandments of the Lord, and you will do them, and you will not follow the lust of your own heart and your own eyes.


The first ripe fruit of all which is in their land, which they will bring to the Lord, will be yours. Everyone who is clean in your house will eat of it.


What fruit did you have then from the things of which you are now ashamed? The result of those things is death.


He found him in a desert land and in the howling waste of a wilderness; He led him about, He instructed him, He protected him like the pupil of His eye.


They sacrificed to demons, not to God, to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that recently came along, whom your fathers did not fear.


Your eyes have seen what the Lord did at Baal-peor, for the Lord your God has destroyed from among you all the men who followed Baal of Peor.


Therefore on that day he called him Jerub-Baal, saying, “Let Baal fight him, for he tore down the altar of Baal.”
