1 Then the Lord said to me, “Go, again, love a woman who is loved by a lover and is committing adultery, just as the Lord loves the Israelites, who look to other gods and love raisin cakes.”

He distributed to all of the people, the entire multitude of Israel, both men and women, one bread cake, one date cake, and one raisin cake to each one. Then all of the people left, each to his house.


But the Lord was gracious to them and had compassion on them. He turned toward them because of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not yet destroy them or cast them from His presence.


Then he distributed to all the Israelites, both men and women, a loaf of bread, a piece of meat, and a raisin cake for each.


Nevertheless, for the sake of Your abundant mercy, You did not completely destroy them or forsake them. Indeed, You are a gracious and merciful God.


Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress, so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God, until He has mercy upon us.


So they rose up early on the next day, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings. And the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.


Sustain me with raisin cakes, refresh me with apricots; for I am faint with love.


Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth. For I am God, and there is no other.


Surely as a wife treacherously departs from her husband, so you have dealt treacherously with Me, O house of Israel, says the Lord.


Is Ephraim My dear son? Is he a pleasant child? For since I spoke against him, I still remember him; therefore My heart longs for him. I will surely have mercy on him, says the Lord.


How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboyim? My heart churns within Me; My compassion is stirred.


For their mother has played the whore. She that conceived them has acted shamefully. For she said, “I will pursue my lovers, who provide my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.”

On the day of our king the princes made him sick from the heat of wine. He stretched out his hand with scorners.


They recline by every altar on garments taken in pledge, and in the house of their gods they drink the wine from those who have been fined.

But as for me, I watch for the Lord; I await the God of my salvation; my God will hear me.


Therefore thus says the Lord: I have returned to Jerusalem with mercy, and My house will be built in it, says the Lord of Hosts, and a measuring line will be stretched over Jerusalem.


And Jesus said to him, “Friend, why have you come?” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him.


You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons.


Neither be idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to revel.”


For in earlier times of our lives it may have sufficed us to do what the Gentiles like to do, when we walked in immorality: lusts, drunkenness, carousing, debauchery, and abominable idolatries.


They removed the foreign gods from among them and worshipped the Lord, and He could no longer endure the suffering of Israel.


They went out to the field, gathered and trod their grapes, and had a celebration. They went to the temple of their god and ate, drank, and cursed Abimelech.
