1 Ephraim feeds on the wind and chases after the east wind all day long. He multiplies lies and devastation. They make a covenant with Assyria, and oil is carried to Egypt.

And behold, after them sprang up seven ears, thin and scorched by the east wind.


Pul the king of Assyria came against the land, and Menahem gave Pul a thousand talents of silver, that he might help him strengthen his control of the kingdom.


He even made high places in the hill country of Judah and caused those in Jerusalem to be like prostitutes, and he led Judah astray.


“Should a wise man reply with empty knowledge and fill his lungs with the east wind?


Nevertheless they flattered Him with their mouths, and they lied to Him with their tongues;


Why do you go about so much to change your way? You also shall be ashamed of Egypt, as you were ashamed of Assyria.


The wind will sweep away all your shepherds, and your lovers shall go into captivity; surely then you will be ashamed and humiliated for all your wickedness.


I will cast you out of My sight as I have cast out all your brothers, even the whole seed of Ephraim.


We have given our hand to Egypt and to Assyria, to be satisfied with bread.


Behold, though it has been planted, will it prosper? Shall it not utterly wither when the east wind hits it? It shall wither in the furrows where it grew.


Ephraim has surrounded Me with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit. But Judah still walks with God, and is faithful to the Holy One.


I will not execute the fierceness of My anger; I will not again destroy Ephraim. For I am God, and not man, the Holy One in your midst, and I will not come in wrath.


Though you play the whore, O Israel, do not let Judah offend. Do not come to Gilgal, or go up to Beth-aven, and do not swear, “As the Lord lives.”


A wind has wrapped her in its wings, and they will be ashamed because of their sacrifices.


When Ephraim saw his sickness and Judah saw his wound, then Ephraim went to Assyria, and sent to King Jareb. Yet he cannot cure you or heal your wound.


When I would heal Israel, the iniquity of Ephraim is revealed, and the wickedness of Samaria. For they deal deceitfully; the thief breaks in; the robbers raid outside,


Ephraim is like a dove, silly and without sense; they call to Egypt, they go to Assyria.


For they sow the wind, and they will reap the whirlwind. The standing grain has no head and will yield no flour. If it were to yield, foreigners would swallow it up.
