But from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin, Jehu did not turn aside (that is, the golden calves that were in Bethel and Dan).


They forsook all the commandments of the Lord their God, made themselves cast images (two calves), made an Asherah pole, worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Baal.


Then he removed the idolatrous priests whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense on the high places at the cities of Judah and around Jerusalem; those also who burned incense to Baal, to the sun, to the moon, to the constellations, and to all the host of heaven.


And he set for himself priests for the high places and for the goat and calf idols that he made.


“And now you think that you can withstand before the kingdom of the Lord by the hand of the sons of David. And you all are a great multitude, and with you are the golden calves that Jeroboam has made for you to be gods.


They stoop, they bow down together; they could not deliver the burden, but themselves have gone into captivity.


And now they continue sinning and have made a cast image for themselves, idols of their silver, according to their understanding; all of them the work of craftsmen. They say of them, “Those who sacrifice are kissing calves!”


Though you play the whore, O Israel, do not let Judah offend. Do not come to Gilgal, or go up to Beth-aven, and do not swear, “As the Lord lives.”


Blow the horn in Gibeah, and the trumpet in Ramah. Cry aloud at Beth-aven, “Look behind you, O Benjamin!”


Do not rejoice, O Israel! Do not exult like the peoples, for you have played the whore departing from your God. You have loved a prostitute’s wages on every threshing floor.


As for Ephraim, their glory shall fly away like a bird: no birth, no pregnancy, no conception!


Surely on the day I punish the transgressions of Israel, I will also punish the altars of Bethel; the horns of the altar will be cut off and fall to the ground.


I will stretch out my hand against Judah, and against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. I will cut off from this place the remnant of Baal, and the name of the idolatrous priests along with the priests,


Now not only is our trade in danger of coming into disrepute, but also the temple of the great goddess Artemis, whom all Asia and the world worship, may be discredited and her magnificence destroyed.”


Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai (which is near Beth-aven, east of Bethel) and said to them, “Go up and spy on the land.” So the men went up and spied on Ai.


He said, “You took the gods that I made, and the priest, and then you left. What do I have left? So what is this that you say to me, ‘What is wrong?’ ”
