Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she called his name Reuben, for she said, “Surely the Lord has looked upon my affliction. Now therefore my husband will love me.”


When Israel lived in that land, Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father’s concubine, and Israel heard about it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:


The sons of Leah were Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, and Simeon and Levi and Judah and Issachar and Zebulun.


These were the names of the sons of Israel, Jacob and his sons, who came to Egypt: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn.
