Israel vowed a vow to the Lord and said, “If You will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.”


It was after he had slain Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who lived at Ashtaroth in Edrei.


“Arise, set out on your journey, and cross the River Arnon. Behold, I have given Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land into your hand. Begin to possess it and contend with him in battle.


We took all his cities at that time and utterly destroyed the men, the women, and the sons of every city. We left no survivors.


You have not eaten bread, nor have you drunk wine or strong drink, so that you might know that I am the Lord your God.


Then the Lord said to me, “Do not fear him, for I will deliver him and all his people and his land into your hand; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.”


All these cities were fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides a great many rural towns.


The Israelites plundered all the goods and the livestock of these cities, but they struck all the people with the edge of the sword until they destroyed them. They did not spare anyone who breathed.
