For a long time Israel has been without the true God, and without a teaching priest and without law,


We do not see our signs; there is no longer any prophet, nor is there any among us who knows how long.


Where there is no vision, the people perish, but blessed is he who keeps the law.


And I will lay it waste: It shall not be pruned or dug, but briers and thorns shall come up. I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain on it.


Mischief shall come upon mischief, and rumor shall be upon rumor. Then they shall seek a vision of the prophet; but the law shall perish from the priest, and counsel from the elders.


lest I strip her naked and leave her as in the day that she was born, and turn her into a wilderness, and turn her into a dry land, and kill her with thirst.


Therefore you will have night without vision, and you will have darkness without divination; the sun will set upon the prophets, and black upon them will be the day.


But when He saw the crowds, He was moved with compassion for them, because they fainted and were scattered, like sheep without a shepherd.


Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you roused me to bring me up?” And Saul answered, “I am greatly distressed, for the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me and does not answer me any longer by prophets or by dreams. Therefore I have called you that you might make known to me what I should do.”


Saul inquired of the Lord, but the Lord did not answer him by dreams, or by lots, or by prophets.


Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was rare in those days. There was no vision coming forth.
