Acts 21:40 - Modern English Version

40 When he had given him permission, Paul stood on the stairs and motioned with his hand to the people. When there was great silence, he addressed them in the Aramaic language, saying,

Then they hurried. Each took his clothes, put them under him on the bare stairs, and blew a horn, saying, “Jehu is king.”


An inscription was written over Him in letters of Greek and Latin and Hebrew: this is the king of the jews.


When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement (which in Hebrew is Gabbatha).


He went out, carrying His own cross, to a place called The Place of a Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha.


Many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city. And it was written in Hebrew, in Greek, and in Latin.


Now in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate there is a pool, which in Hebrew is called Bethesda, having five porches.


It became known to all the residents of Jerusalem. So this field is called in their dialect Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)


Motioning to them with his hand to be quiet, he described to them how the Lord had led him out of the prison. And he said, “Go, tell these things to James and to the brothers.” Then he departed and went to another place.


Then Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said: “Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen.


The Jews pushed Alexander to the front as the crowd prompted him. Alexander motioned with his hand, wishing to make his defense to the mob.


When he came onto the stairs, he was carried by the soldiers, because of the violence of the people.


When they heard that he addressed them in the Aramaic language, they became even more quiet. Then he said,


When we had all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the Aramaic language, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’


Now in those days, as the disciples were multiplied, there was murmuring among the Hellenists against the Hebrews, because their widows were overlooked in the daily distribution.


They gathered them together to the place which in Hebrew is called Armageddon.


They had as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek his name is Apollyon.
