12 David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of Jabesh-gilead who had secretly taken them from the plaza in Beth-shan, where the Philistines had hung them the day the Philistines struck down Saul on Gilboa.

O mountains of Gilboa, may there be no rain or dew upon you or your bountiful fields; for there the shield of the mighty was defiled! The shield of Saul is no longer anointed with oil.


The young man who was reporting to him answered, “I happened to be on Mount Gilboa when, in front of me, Saul was leaning on his spear; and behold, the chariots and the horsemen were close behind him.


Then the men of Judah came and there anointed David as king over the house of Judah, and they informed David that it was the men of Jabesh-gilead who had buried Saul.


When David was told that which Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done,


He brought up the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from there, and they gathered the bones of those who had been hanged.


Now when the Philistines fought against Israel, every Israelite fled before the Philistines, and the slain fell on Mount Gilboa.


so their valiant men rose up and carried the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons to Jabesh. They buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.


The next day, when the Philistines came to pillage the slain, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.


In Issachar and Asher, Manasseh was assigned districts: Beth-shan, Ibleam, Dor, En-dor, Taanach, Megiddo, Naphoth, and their respective villages.


Then the Philistines gathered themselves together. And they came and camped in Shunem. So Saul gathered all Israel together, and they camped in Gilboa.


Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel, and Israel’s fighting men fled before the Philistines and they fell slain on Mount Gilboa.


The battle was heavy against Saul. The archers found him, and he was severely wounded by the archers.


Then Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through and abuse me.” But his armor bearer would not, for he was very afraid. Therefore Saul took his sword and fell upon it.
