12 Hazael said, “Why are you weeping, my lord?” He said, “Because I know the evil that you will do to the Israelites. You will set their fortresses on fire. You will kill their young men with the sword. You will smash their children and rip open their pregnant women.”

Were you not told what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of the Lord, how I hid a hundred men of the Lord’s prophets in groups of fifty in a cave and fed them with bread and water?


He who escapes the sword of Hazael will be killed by Jehu, and he who escapes the sword of Jehu will be killed by Elisha.


Then Hazael king of Aram went up, fought against Gath, and seized it. Then Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem.


So Jehoash king of Judah took all the consecrated things that Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated and his own consecrated things, all the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of the Lord and in the king’s house, and sent it to Hazael king of Aram. Then Hazael went away from Jerusalem.


Now Hazael king of Aram oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz.


The anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, so He gave them into the hand of Hazael king of Aram and into the hand of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael all their days.


So Jehoahaz had only fifty horsemen, ten chariots, and ten thousand footmen left, for the king of Aram had destroyed them and made them like the dust at threshing.


Then Menahem struck Tiphsah and all who were in it, and the territories around Tirzah. Because they did not open up the city to him, he attacked it. Then he split open all its pregnant women.


Then she said, “Did I ask for a son from my lord? Did I not say, Do not give me false hope?”


Their children also shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be devastated and their wives ravished.


Their bows also shall dash the young men to pieces, and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eye shall not spare children.


therefore a tumult will arise among your people, and all your fortresses will be destroyed as Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel in the day of battle; mothers were dashed to pieces upon their children.


Samaria will be held guilty, for she has rebelled against her God. They will fall by the sword, their infants will be dashed to pieces, and their pregnant women will be ripped open.


Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God, for you have stumbled because of your iniquity.


Thus says the Lord: For three transgressions of the Ammonites, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead, in order to enlarge their border.


Yet she went into exile, she went into captivity; her young children were dashed to pieces at the head of every street; they cast lots for her honorable men, and all her great men were bound in chains.
