Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed and said in his heart, “Shall a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?”


Now Isaac pleaded with the Lord for his wife, because she was barren; and the Lord granted his plea, and Rebekah his wife conceived.


When Rachel saw that she could not give Jacob children, she became jealous of her sister. She said to Jacob, “Give me children, or I will die.”


He said to him, “Say to her, Look, you have gone to all this trouble for us. What may be done for you? Would you have a word spoken on your behalf to the king, or to the captain of the army?” And she answered, “I am living among my people.”


He said, “Call her.” When he had called her, she stood in the entrance.


But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they both were now well advanced in years.


There was a certain man from Zorah, from the tribe of Dan. His name was Manoah. His wife was infertile and had borne no children.


And he had two wives; the name of one was Hannah and the name of the second was Peninnah. Now Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.


Then said Elkanah her husband to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? And why do you not eat? Why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”
